The history of the RSPB is fascinating. Its origins date back to the 1890s when two women’s groups united to form the SPB with the determined purpose to stamp out the use of feathers in ladies’ hats and so protect the birds. As with all things, the issue was complex, many working-class woman worked in the feather industry and so faced the loss of their jobs – there were clashes with the women’s suffrage movement and as the women gained success, men moved in to take up the cause.
