SUMMARY:A Golden Age of Summer - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:A Golden Age of Summer \nA temporary exhibition at Ely Museum from 26 July – 14 September 2025 \nYou are invited to a summer of relaxation and play at Ely Museum! \nInspired by the long\, lazy\, summer days of the Edwardian period\, our summer exhibition encourages you to linger and lounge: play at a picnic\, sit with a book or take a selfie in our boat on the river. Throughout the summer we’ll have games and activities in the museum and courtyard as well as immersive play in the temporary exhibition itself. \nThe Edwardian period in the popular imagination is a time of sunshine and day trips and garden parties\, sandwiched between the strict morals of the Victorian Age and the devastation of the First World War. Building on this rose-tinted dream of the past and drawing from photographs in the museum collection\, we’ve created an immersive space to come and recreate the relaxation of a golden summer at the start of the twentieth century. \nWe are delighted that our summer exhibition features artwork by Laura Pearson-Clark of Art in the Burrow. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:SAS Duty Before Glory
DESCRIPTION:SAS Duty Before Glory – The True WWII Story of SAS Original Reg Seekings \nTuesday 13th May 7pm \nA talk by Tony Rushmer \nReg Seekings’ rise to become one of the most highly-decorated Special Forces soldiers of the Second World War is a story of gallantry and leadership. A farm labourer’s son from the East of England\, he began the global conflict at the bottom of the ladder and climbed the ranks to become a squadron sergeant major in the Special Air Service. \nReg made his name in the SAS after becoming one of its very first recruits in the summer of 1941 in North Africa. He soon became involved in a series of daring behind-the-lines operations\, including the new unit’s very first successful assault (at Tamet airfield). His fierce ambition \, inner strength and courage continued to serve him well as he fought in Sicily and Italy alongside his brother Bob and their Fenland friend Eric Musk. At times\, Reg relied on Lady Luck – he survived a bullet to the base of his skull during a mission in France in 1944. \nThe following year Seekings was in Belsen as part of an SAS jeep patrol on the day that the infamous concentration camp was liberated. The experience came at the end of a war in which he saw more action than most and became an SAS great – a reputation that endures to this day. \n  \nTony Rushmer has been a journalist for almost 30 years\, covering a wide range of top-class sport for print and broadcast media. His first book was the critically-acclaimed The Triumph of Henry Cil\, which was one of three finalists for the 2019 Dr Tony Ryan Award. He runs his own PR and communications business and lives in fenland Cambridgeshire\, a couple of miles from where Reg Seekings was born. \n  \nThis event is sold out

SUMMARY:The World Turned Upside Down
DESCRIPTION:The World Turned Upside Down \nTuesday 8th April 7pm \nA talk by Stuart Orme \nWe tend to think of the English Civil Wars as being rather romantic – with dashing stories of cavaliers and roundheads\, but what was it really like for those who lived through this turbulent period? This talk looks at the experience of ordinary people\, soldiers\, and civilians\, of one of the bloodiest and most important times in our history\, including the real birth of ‘fake news’ and the origins of some of our modern sayings.\n \nStuart is a graduate historian with postgraduate qualifications in Education and Museum Studies\, who has worked in Museums and Heritage in East Anglia for over 20 years. Since February 2018 he has been Curator of the Cromwell Museum in Huntingdon. He has a passion for history\, which he enjoys sharing with people through his work\, as well as writing books and articles\, delivering talks and through regular broadcasts on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. \nTickets: £8.50 \nPlease note – this talk is now sold out \n  \n

SUMMARY:Make A Fascinator
DESCRIPTION:Make A Fascinator \nSaturday 15th March \n1.30pm-4pm \nA workshop with Mill House Millinery \nHave you ever looked at a fascinator in a shop and thought I quite like this\, but fancy it in a different colour? Or perhaps you’ve wanted to take an element from one piece\, and add it to another? \nOr perhaps you’ve just wondered ‘how do they make that’? If any of those strike a chord with you\, why not come and learn how to mix and match and make your own fascinator? \n  \nWhen you arrive there will be an assortment of fascinators in a variety of colours and shapes for you to try on to find out what you like. All of them will have been made using the techniques you will be learning\, so you can find out what works for you. Over the course of 2 ½ hours you will learn how to make a fascinator uniquely designed by you. You’ll learn how to make three different shapes from sinamay\, a twist\, a flower and some petals. Then\, it’s over to you to decide how you want to mix and match them to make your own fascinator. You’ll be taught how to attach your shapes to a headband\, then add extra trimmings too. \n  \nBasic sewing skills are required\, but if you might struggle\, don’t worry\, help will be on hand. \nThere will be a variety of colours available\, but if you have a particular colour in mind\, please let us know in advance. \nYou’ll leave with a beautiful fascinator\, ready to wear for your next event\, be it the races\, a wedding\, or a special afternoon tea. \n£50 Tickets \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Bookshop\, The Draper\, The Candlestick Maker
DESCRIPTION:The Bookshop\, The Draper\, The Candlestick Maker: A history of the High Street \nTuesday 11th March 7pm \nA talk by Dr Annie Gray \nWhat makes a high street? And are they really dying – or merely changing\, as they have always done? What were they like in the past? How did we shop in the days before ready-to-wear\, self-selection\, pre-packaged food or even affordable glazing? And is it really all about the retail – or do people\, buildings and a sense of place play a role in it all as well? \nHistorian Annie Gray joins us to talk about one of Britain’s best-loved spaces; one we purport to love\, but which we often neglect. Based on the research for her latest book\, she’ll bring to life the high streets of our parents\, grandparents and many great-ancestors\, putting the modern shopping experience into historic context. Expect humour\, nostalgia and Annie’s trademark forthrightness as we peep into the windows of exploding grocery shops\, toyshops aimed squarely at adults\, and – of course – eating houses and drinking venues from the medieval period to the only-just-past. \nSOLD OUT \n  \n  \n
