SUMMARY:Empress Matilda
DESCRIPTION:Empress Matilda \nA talk by Professor Elisabeth van Houts \nTuesday 3rd November 7pm  \nEmpress Matilda (1102-67) and Ely during the civil war (1135-54). \nIn this lecture\, Professor van Houts will discuss Matilda’s unique position as the first uncrowned queen regnant of England\, her struggle against her cousin King Stephen (1135-1154)\, and her ultimate support for her son Henry II\, Stephen’s successor. Sent as child bride\, aged 8\, Matilda was sent to marry Emperor Henry V of Germany. The first evidence we have of her betrothal is her autograph cross in the charter that established Ely as a bishopric in 1109.  Aged 23 as a childless widow Matilda returned to her father\, who then designated her as his heir and successor. But on Henry I’s death her cousin Stephen stole her crown. Matilda\, remarried and as mother of three sons sailed to England to challenge Stephen. In 1141 she almost succeeded; having briefly imprisoned him she was acclaimed queen regnant of England. On the eve of her coronation the Londoners forced her to flee and for the rest of her time in England Matilda was based in Oxford and Devizes. Although she never visited East Anglia\, several of her prominent advisers\, amongst them Bishop Nigel of Ely\, strongly supported her.  The last twenty years of her life she spent in Normandy. \nElisabeth van Houts is a Life Fellow of Emmanuel College and Emeritus Honorary Professor of European Medieval History at the University of Cambridge.  She has written widely on medieval Anglo-Norman history\, gender and memory. Her most recent books are Married Life in the Middle Ages\, 900-1300 (Oxford University Press\, 2019) and Empress Matilda\, Queen of the Romans and Ruler of the English\, English Monarch Series (London\, Yale University Press\, 2026) \nTickets £8.50 \nGates open at 6.30pm \n  \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Folky Paper Garland Making Workshop \nSaturday 14th November 2026 \nTwo time slots are available for this 2 hour workshop\, either: 11am – 1pm or 2pm – 4pm  \nRunning the workshop will be Freya Elise who is a paper cut artist from Norwich who makes art inspired by nature and folktales.\nParticipants will be guided to create their own mirrored paper cut garlands using a craft knife and coloured card\, taking inspiration from Christmas and Winter folk traditions.\n\nThere will be printed templates available as well as a range of books to use as inspiration for creating custom designs. Everyone will cut out 6 designs that we can string together creating a lovely unique hand made holiday decoration.\n\nAll tools and materials will be provided.\nWorkshop includes tea and cake. \nTickets £25 \n \n  \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Our Little Explorer mornings are a workshop for accompanied pre-school children held monthly at the museum. \nJoin us for creative sessions of themed activities\, crafts\, stories and songs. Enrich your day with opportunities for social interaction\, development of fine motor skills and imaginative play. \nTickets\, which should be pre-booked online\, are £3.50 for children.  The session usually takes place on the third Friday of the month\, and runs from 10:00am – 12:00pm. \nChildren must be accompanied throughout. Accompanying adults must have a museum annual pass or purchase an admission ticket. As space in the room is limited\, please try to keep numbers of accompanying adults to one per child\, unless agreed by Ely Museum staff in advance. \nThere is lift access to the Aedwen room\, a place for pushchairs & baby changing facilities on both floors of the museum.   \nOur November theme is Dinosaur Roar.
