SUMMARY:The Bookshop\, The Draper\, The Candlestick Maker
DESCRIPTION:The Bookshop\, The Draper\, The Candlestick Maker: A history of the High Street \nTuesday 11th March 7pm \nA talk by Dr Annie Gray \nWhat makes a high street? And are they really dying – or merely changing\, as they have always done? What were they like in the past? How did we shop in the days before ready-to-wear\, self-selection\, pre-packaged food or even affordable glazing? And is it really all about the retail – or do people\, buildings and a sense of place play a role in it all as well? \nHistorian Annie Gray joins us to talk about one of Britain’s best-loved spaces; one we purport to love\, but which we often neglect. Based on the research for her latest book\, she’ll bring to life the high streets of our parents\, grandparents and many great-ancestors\, putting the modern shopping experience into historic context. Expect humour\, nostalgia and Annie’s trademark forthrightness as we peep into the windows of exploding grocery shops\, toyshops aimed squarely at adults\, and – of course – eating houses and drinking venues from the medieval period to the only-just-past. \nSOLD OUT \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Mapping Your World Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Mapping Your World Workshop \nSaturday 16th November \n10:30am-4pm \nCreate your own map and turn it into a pop up book. \nIn this one day workshop Inksmith and mapmaker Chrissie Nicholls\, Inkpot & Pen\, will take you through the\njourney of making your own unique map. \nThis workshop is about the art of telling a story in a map; recording an area\, a memory\, or a made\nup location. Using traditional and new mapping techniques and elements you will bring together\nyour thoughts to create a very personal piece of work. \nThe workshop begins with a discussion about maps and their importance to us in our everyday\nlives. You will design and draw your map working towards a finished piece\, when at the end of the\nworkshop you’ll use a traditional fold to transform your flat map into a pop up one and bind it into\na cover. \nThe day is full of instruction and information as you journey with your map. You’ll be able to bring\ntogether drawing\, lettering and collage techniques with support\, guidance and humour throughout\nthe workshop. \nYou don’t need to be confident with your drawing or lettering\, all that’s needed just an open mind\nto be curious. \nAll materials for the workshop are supplied but you are encouraged to bring your own colour\npencils\, watercolours or pens to the workshop. And if you have your own a bone folder bring that\ntoo. (Don’t worry if you don’t know what a bone folder is\, you will by the end of the workshop!) \nYou will also be contacted a fortnight before the workshop with information about what to bring\nwith you as reference on the day. \nWe have fun in these classes and discussion is encouraged at points through the workshop so we\ncan learn and be inspired by each other. \n£85 Tickets \n \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Cambridgeshire Witchcraft Trials

We will discover why witches were treated with such fear in the seventeenth century\, and what happened to those who were suspected of witchcraft. \n31st October at 7pm at Ely Museum  \nTickets £8.50 \n
