Help our project become a reality
Unlocking the Old Gaol
Ely Museum has received support from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the ‘Unlocking the Potential of the Old Gaol’ project.
The project aims to transform the museum over the next two years and to work more closely with local communities. The museum will become a heritage hub for locals and tourists, introducing them to the history of the area. New galleries, a series of events and exhibitions and welcoming visitor facilities will create an exciting destination for local families, schools and visitors to the area while resources and trails will encourage people to explore the district further.
What the Project aims to do
What are we doing?
We will be redisplaying or galleries, refurbishing the Old Gaol building, and building an extension at the back to house a lift, more toilets and a new Education room and community space.
Why is this needed?
our building is not fit for purpose: systems such as the lighting and stairlift are on their last legs. the displays are faded and tired and there isn’t space to include our newest artifacts. We don’t have good enough toilet and kitchen facilities for schools and groups. we also want to do a better job of engaging with local communities and telling the stories that interest them
