Gallery 4: The Last Invaders

16th century pottery

The arrival of the Vikings brought destruction to the Abbey made of wood and thatch, which was burnt to the ground in circa 870 AD. As a part of the Danelaw it would have been under nominal Viking rule but the benefits were probably as great as the dangers. It was the Norman Conquest of 1066 that brought about the last great cultural change in the fens as it did for the whole of England. Take time to look at the extracts from the Domesday record of the area. See how small the population was and how scattered. Note especially how much land the monastery owned! Note its power — a power that would grow with time.

One of the finest pieces on display in this gallery is the Grimston Jug, which is featured in the original Tudor doorway.
